Timescales

All bulk earthworks and tiered retaining walls were executed within a single dry season, stabilising sensitive canyon slopes before seasonal rains began.

Superstructure construction cascaded downward tier-by-tier so subcontractor trades could follow in a rolling ‘caterpillar’ sequence, streamlining workflows.

Native grass plugs were planted immediately after each terrace’s waterproofing cured, giving roots time to establish before monsoon rains and completing the project in 21 months.

Objectives

Seamlessly blend medium-density housing into canyon geology while maximising cross-ventilation, passive cooling, and unbroken sunrise-to-sunset vistas for every unit.

Support intergenerational living with universal-design ground-level flats for seniors and rooftop duplexes designed for young professionals.

Plant communal orchards along shaded switch-back pathways, encouraging neighbour interaction and local food cultivation in the arid environment.

Materials

Shotcrete retaining walls are sculpted and pigmented to echo local sedimentary strata, and floor slabs incorporate high recycled-aggregate concrete content.

Weathering-steel balustrades laser-cut with canyon topographic lines double as cantilevered shading screens for balconies below.

Oversized rainwater scuppers feed linear bioswales planted with native reeds, functioning as both drainage channels and living privacy screens.

Challenges

Unstable scree identified by drone photogrammetry required additional micro-piles and minor unit realignments during foundation works.

A single narrow switch-back access road enforced just-in-time deliveries, and rock-fall risk necessitated overhead protective mesh canopies for workers.

Protected hawk nesting zones paused noisy work for two months; mitigation included seasonal scheduling adjustments and interpretive signage for residents.
